Antimicrobial Effect of Aristolochia contorta Bge. Extract on the Growth of Pathogenic and Putrefactive Microorganisms

Abstract
To investigate the function and effectiveness of natural antimicrobial agents extracted from medicinal herb, Aristolochia contorta Bge., their antimicrobial activities were tested against Bacillus cereus, Cory- nebacterium xerosis, Pseudomonas syringae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Candida albicans and Fusarium sp. causing the decay of agricultural products and their processing foods. The aquous extracts of Aristolochia contorta Bge., showed remarkable inhibitory effect on the growth of above-mentioned reference microorganisms when treated with more than 500 ppm. The antimicrobial activities of Aristolochia contorta Bge. extract were very stable in the wide spectrum of temperature (40¡É¢¦150¡É) and pH 4¢¦10.
